This massive storm cut a 2400 mile path from Missouri through to Toronto, Canada. In its wake it left over 100 ships damaged, 27 would never sail again. 60 lives were lost on the lakes alone. It’s named Equinoctal because many meteorologists theorized that storms took their fury from the orbits of planets. A mythical “Vulcan” planet supposedly affected the orbit of Mercury and some ‘scientists’ believed it fueled the intensity of the gales. Lakes Huron and Erie were blasted by high winds and rain and several ships were lost along Michigan’s east coast. You can listen to my podcast for details on some of the wrecks, and a sole survivor named Frank Root that was found floating near Fish Point, Michigan.  Pictured is wreckage from the barge “Table Rock”, which also only had one survivor. The shipwreck lies just to the south and west of the lighthouse at Tawas Point.
